Winemaker Notes - Our Russian River Chardonnay is born from Wood Vineyard, located on River Road, and River Vineyard, located on East Side Road. The floral, mineral, and lime aromas of the River Vineyard are complemented by the peach and apricot aromas of the Wood Vineyard. Our winemaking philosophy remains the same since we introduced the Russian River Chardonnay in 1993: less intervention is better with chardonnay. Winemaking techniques including sur-lie aging, lees stirring, full malolactic fermentation, and the measured use of some new French oak are employed to bring you this delicious rendition from Sonoma's premier chardonnay appellation. Our Russian River Chardonnay spotlights the floral/lime quality of the fruit aromas and accents them with toasty, graham cracker sur-lie qualities. The mouthfeel is creamy and full but the natural acidity of the Russian River fruit carries this velvet textured package to a long, clean finish.

Wine maker notesThe vines from this Old Vine Russian River Valley vineyard are maintained with the emphasis of low yields and intense fruit. If you have had the past vintages of this MARA wine then you know the wines have been packed with flavors. The color is dense purple with the aromas of black raspberry, black cherry and chocolate. The wine is full bodied with lots of glycerin. As stated this wine is packed with all the flavor profiles that this Old Vine Russian River Valley vineyard hands out. The taste has a touch of vanilla, cedar and chocolate with a very nice back flavor of black licorice. A well structured wine that will benefit by a year or so in the bottle, but drinks extremely well right now. This ranch is right in the heart of the Russian River Valley and at harvest time goes through 3 microclimates to get all the intense flavors that I am looking for. As always a very small amount of cases are produced from an average of less than 1/2 ton per acre. The cool, foggy Russian River Valley climate allows for slow ripening, enabling grapes to develop full flavor maturation over an extended time. The fruit for our 2007 blend was hand-harvested from select vineyards around the valley and crafted using traditional Burgundian techniques: fermentation in small, wooden, open-top vats; hand punch-downs; basket-pressing; and French oak barrel aging.Ripe raspberries lift from the glass and mingle with tempting aromas of strawberry- rhubarb tart and cola. Delicate notes of anise, cardamom and gingerbread spice lace the fruit to unfold a rich palate of black cherries supported by medium-fine-graine d tannins. The finish lingers with attractive, subtle, toasty undertones, fine acid and excellent balance. Pairs beautifully with barbecued leg of lamb or braised pork tenderloin.

Our 2003 Block Eleven Syrah is produced from a single block in a vineyard near the banks of the Russian River. The vineyard is located on a well drained, gravelly site less than one mile from the Russian River. This vineyard experiences the full impact of the cooling fog which travels up its banks. The fruit is harvested in the cool morning hours and transported to the winery (about 15 minutes away) for crushing into our small, two-ton custom designed fermenting tanks. A portion of juice is fermented using pure strain yeast. The balance ferments spontaneously with wild (indigenous) yeast. During fermentation, we punch down the cap by hand several times each day to gently extract the grapes flavors and aromas. The wine is aged in French oak barrels, of which about 50% is new.Wine maker notesThis is a delicious, distinctive and decadently fruit laden wine. Intense aromas of blackberry, black cherry and mocha are echoed in rich and supple flavors. Toasted oak, vanilla and caramel flavors pipe in on the complex, smooth finish.
